Below is an overview of how I create my cartoon designs. Check out how I go from a blank piece of papeer, to a colorized finished cartoon logo or illustration. These are the steps that I use for almost all of my cartoon designs. I no longer use ink. Once the cartoon is drawn, I use the computer to add the finishing touches. I hope you enjoy. |

My
first step is to draw the design on paper with a pencil. I use whatever
paper is within reach.
Sometimes I use regular copy paper, other times I use the edges of the electric bill. This stage usually takes the most time. I can redraw and erase up to 15-20 times on just one area. Notice the hair and the right hand. I have erased and redrawn these areas several times. I use cheap, disposable Bic mechanical pencils - #2, 0.7mm. I draw on a very small light table and scan my drawing with an Epson printer/scanner. I scan at 300 dpi. as a TIFF file. ![]() The next step is to use Photoshop to clean up the lines and erase the smudge marks. I try to create thin and thick lines during this process with the pen tool. I make sure every line is smooth and there are no fuzzy edges or bumps sticking out. The next step is to place the image in Illustrator CS2 and Auto Trace it. I use the comic art setting. Hit expand and you have a nice detailed vector file. I also add any props or lettering at this stage. This is where I add the company name and I also might add a little bit of color. Once I'm happy with this stage I save the design as a vector AI file and convert all fonts to curves. Below I created the beads and surfboard in Illustrator using ovals and lines. I also added limited color. The last step is to add more color in Illustrator, and also shading and highlights. Once I finish this stage I can save the file in almost any format that any printer would need.
That's all folks! See another sample - How to create more great looking cartoon logos. |
